The 2nd grade Lady Cobras basketball team went undefeated in the Hiawatha league this winter. The team consisted of five 2nd graders and two 1st graders. They delivered an 18-6 win over Sabetha Blue Jays in week 1. In week 2, the Lady Cobras struggled in the first 5 minutes of the game, quickly falling behind Doniphan West 4-6. This was a significant turning point for the girls as the defense they would deliver on the rest of the season caught the other teams' attention. They wouldn’t be scored on again in the remaining 35 minutes and delivered with a 28-6 win. They followed this with a 32-2 win and defensive demonstration over Hiawatha in week 3. In the season's final game, they faced Sabetha again and delivered a 34-5 win. This gave them the top seed going into the tournament on Feb 11th. In the tournament's first round, they faced Doniphan West, where they won 19-1. This win sent them straight to the championship game in the tournament facing Sabetha for a third time in the season. This was physically the toughest game of the season, but the 2nd Grade Lady Cobras Defense once again proved their number one asset as they held the Blue Jays to 0 field goals and just three points, all coming from free throws. They ended the game with a 23-3 victory to remain undefeated and clinch the tournament championship. Their defense, heart, and basketball IQ led to their great success this year. They were truly a joy to watch and coach, and the girls are already looking forward to next year.
The team consisted of Tenley Wessel, Grace Mellies, Ellie Plowman, Cora Martin, Hannah Holthaus, Ada Drobek, and Madden Martin. Coached by Derek Plowman.
