Jackson Heights FCCLA Students Shine at St. Mary's High School Competition
The Jackson Heights FCCLA students achieved remarkable success at the recent competition held at St. Mary's High School, with every single student placing first and earning their spot at the state competition. Their hard work, dedication, and passion for their projects were evident, and we are incredibly proud of their achievements. These students have devoted countless hours to their projects, and their success is well-deserved.
Highlighting Individual and Team Achievements
Alyssa Mullins & Isaak Karns – Repurpose and Redesign
Alyssa and Isaak took on an environmentally conscious project, repurposing wood from old Jackson Heights lockers along with other scrap materials to build a dog house. Their goal was to donate this structure to the Reservation Humane Shelter. Beyond their craftsmanship, they extensively documented their process and conducted in-depth research on the importance of repurposing materials for environmental sustainability. Their work culminated in a detailed and elaborate presentation, showcasing their findings and craftsmanship.
Marley Nickelson – Animal Welfare Awareness
Marley focused her project on the harsh conditions faced by SeaWorld animals. Through extensive research, she created a compelling presentation that she shared with IRC students and 7th grade FACS students to spread awareness about this critical issue. Her advocacy for animal welfare was well-received and sparked meaningful discussions among students.
Jordyn Banaka – Career Investigation
Jordyn’s project revolved around exploring her future career goal of becoming a preschool teacher. As part of her research, she conducted a job shadowing experience with Mrs. Mulroy at Jackson Heights Elementary, gaining firsthand experience in the classroom setting. Her project reaffirmed her passion for early childhood education and solidified her aspirations for the future.
Madison Smith & McKenzie Carver – Pet Care Education
Madison and McKenzie collaborated with the Jackson Heights Preschool class to educate young students on the importance of proper pet care. They developed and executed a detailed lesson plan, engaging preschoolers in learning how to be responsible pet owners. Their work was documented and presented to judges, highlighting their thorough research and instructional execution.
Danny Bottom – Event Management
Danny took on an ambitious project in event planning by organizing a Christmas celebration for kindergarten students. His event included parents and guardians, offering them the opportunity to participate in holiday activities. He meticulously documented the planning process, including emergency plans, budgeting, SMART goals, and a timeline, to showcase the complexity of executing a successful event. His dedication earned him a Gold ranking in his category.
Nicole Amon, Sabrina Streeter, & Duke Condo – Drug Awareness Education
This team took a proactive approach to substance abuse prevention by educating third-grade students about the dangers of drug use and the importance of making safe choices. Their project required detailed planning, research, and coordination, and their efforts will have a lasting impact in encouraging young students to say NO to drugs.
Aprile Slipke – Ronald McDonald House Fundraiser
Aprile led a successful school-wide donation drive at Jackson Heights Elementary, collecting an impressive amount of bottle tabs to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. She designed the fundraiser structure, created incentives for participation, and organized the final donation delivery. Her project portfolio included SMART goals, budgeting, and research supporting the importance of giving back to families in need.
Madison Lawson – Red Talk & State FCCLA Office Run
Madison participated in an online Red Talk, a format similar to a TED Talk, where she created an informative video on the importance of FACS and FCCLA. Utilizing her public speaking skills, she effectively communicated the significance of these programs. Additionally, Madison will be running for a position in the State FCCLA Office this Monday in Heston, KS, showcasing her leadership and commitment to FCCLA.

Not only did these Jackson Heights Cobras secure their spots at the state competition, but they also made a tangible difference in their community through their thoughtful and impactful projects. Their dedication to education, awareness, and service embodies the values of FCCLA, and we are eager to see their continued success at state.
